Homemade pen

Creating pens on a lathe can be both a simple entertainment and a good way to start working with wood. Handling pens will require a small investment – about $ 200 if you already have a lathe and cutters, or around $ 600-800 if you start from scratch, and you can do this even in a small room the size of a pantry. You just get a set of mechanisms for pens, grind the case out of wood (or from multi-colored composite material) and compress these components together. With a little practice, you can easily make a pen in less than an hour.

We will show how to make the most typical pen with our own hands.

You can vary the shape of the elements being machined to your liking, and the manufacturing process of almost any kit is the same. Well then, let’s get started!

1. Cut two pieces of wood about 3 mm longer than the metal cylinders of the handle from your kit. Mark the blanks so that later they can also be placed relative to each other.

2. Drill a hole in the center of each workpiece that is equal in diameter to the handle cylinder.

H. For better bonding, walk along the cylinder with 100 grit sandpaper to remove polish or dirt. Use medium-viscosity cyanoacrylate (instant) adhesive to secure the core to each wooden blank. After the glue has dried, cut each end of the wooden blanks.

We turn to turning

1. Insert the chuck into the spindle head of the turning tool and place the handle blanks and suitable bushings on the axis, in the order shown in photo E. Attach the other end of this assembly to the conical shank.

2. Set the machine rotation speed to 2500 rpm and round the workpiece body. For the Slimline mechanism, we made it equal in diameter to the components of the handle (8 mm). Smooth the handle body smoothly with sandpaper – first 220 grit, then 600.

Assemble the handle by pressing the components of the mechanism into wooden cylinders with glued-in bushings (glue is no longer required for this) using one of the tools shown here: clamps, a vice or a press for assembling handles.

DIY paper pen – photo

Have you ever held a ballpoint pen in a paper case? We offer to create a designer accessory in the technique of paper plastic.

You will need: kraft paper for packing the ballpoint pen, pencil, ruler, scissors, PVA glue.

On a note

So that the rod does not protrude from the body, you can drip a little glue at the opposite end and press the tip of the workpiece.

On a sheet of wrapping paper (we have 30 × 60 cm) we draw blanks. To do this, lay the segment of 7 cm to the left from the lower right corner. On the opposite side from the upper corner, measure the length of the rod (we have 14 cm). Connect the outline to the lines. We get high pyramids with an acute angle (photo 1).
Cut the blanks, use a triangle with a base of 14 cm (photo)
We attach the ballpoint pen to the base of the figure and tightly start twisting so that it does not fall out. After one or two curls, we apply a strip of glue to fix the twist at the initial stage (photo 3).
We continue to twist the rod into the paper, giving the shape of the handle body. We fix the end of the pyramid PVA (photo 4)
In the origami technique, we perform a lily or another flower for decoration (photo 5). We glue the flower into the body on the opposite side of the stem.
We draw the second blank for the ballpoint pen. We take the first scheme as a basis. We divide the base into two parts and get two sharp peaks that meet, not reaching the base of 20 cm. Cut out and remove the excess paper between the triangles (photo 6)
We wind the workpiece onto the rod in the same way as the first workpiece. We get the body of the second handle, which is distinguished by its relief (photo 7).
